The Palgrove Team extend a very heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all who attended, buyers, under bidders, agents and volunteers that resulted in the fantastic results received from Palgrove 2020 Annual Bull Sale.
The last 12-24 months haven’t been forgiving by any means with relentless drought, fires, and a global health pandemic to put enormous pressure on the agricultural supply chain.Despite the cold and windy weather on Friday, we gratefully welcomed visitors to our on-property sale with a Covid check list and sign-in system in place. We also had a tremendous support online through AuctionsPlus with 477 registered bidders (from every State & Territory). Bulls were sold to four Australian States and we were humbled by the support we received.Sale Day Averages:

Despite the terrible fires in the Stanthorpe district last week, our Annual Bull Sale scheduled for 12 noon, Friday 13th September is not affected. We were very fortunate that the fires did not reach as far north as Dalveen so we are able to still welcome you to our Strathgarve property for a great day out with fellow producers.
If you would like further information on the bulls or the sale – please call Ben Noller M: 0427 700 949
Our thoughts are will those directly affected by the fires across Qld and NSW and thanks goes to all the volunteers and emergencies services staff working hard to keep us all safe.
Palgrove has taken top honours in one of Australia’s most prestigious commercial cattle competitions for a second year in a row.
Following on from our win in 2018, Palgrove was again named the Overall Winner (100 Day class) and Runner Up in the ‘blue ribbon’ Paddock to Palate competition held at the Brisbane Ekka 2019.
Palgrove’s results were as follows:
Overall Winner – 100 day (Charolais)
Runner Up – 100 Day (Charolais)
Weight Gain 100 day (Charolais) (3.095ADG)
Champion Pen – Carcase 100 day (Charolais)
Champion Carcase 100D (Ultrablack x Charolais)
3rd Eating Quality 100D (Ultrablack x Charolais)
Some of Australia’s best producers participate in what is the now country’s richest cattle competition. The competition provides Palgrove with an opportunity to benchmark our steers against the best and validate the commercial production focus we place on our genetics.
Now in its twentieth year, the event attracted the nation’s top beef producers and saw over 1,000 steers entered (up almost 25% on the previous year).
The competition consists of three phases. The Overall Winner is awarded on the best aggregate points for a) feedlot weight gain b) carcase appraisal and c) MSA eating quality points.
Since we started entering in 2016, we are very pleased with the consistent performance of the Palgrove commercial cattle in this competition.
We congratulate the RNA cattle committee, Mort & Co and JBS for the foresight to organise this prestigious and ‘industry relevant’ event. Palgrove’s winning weight gain beef was featured on the Menu at the Boatshed Restaurant, Regatta Hotel in Brisbane during the Ekka. We sampled more than a few delicious steaks and were thrilled to hear that it has received such great feedback from the customers.
We were very proud to have been announced as the Overall Winner in the Primex MSA Feedback Trial held recently in Casino with a pen of our Charolais x Ultrablack steers. This is the first time we have entered the Charolais x Ultrablack in a trial so the results were very pleasing.
The competition is compliant with the Woolworths MSA grain-fed program and aims to benchmark performance in conditions that replicate as closely as possible cattle entering the grain-fed, MSA graded, domestic supply chain. The competition criteria selected those animals that not only met the final requirements for carcase quality but are also profitable at each stage along the chain.
Detailed feedback was collected on individual and group animal performance for feedlot gain, compliance of carcases to market specifications, lean meat yield and eating quality. Carcase judging for the competition was based on the Australian Beef Carcase Appraisal System (ABCAS) for domestic market requirements and lean meat yield calculations was based on updated beef industry research.
The winning team is recognised for being the one which is most profitable throughout the supply chain. The Primex MSA Performance Feedback Trial was
conducted in conjunction with MLA/MSA, Woolworths, Teys Australia and B-Feeder Feedlot Rodgers Ck.
This win comes on the heels of another important commercial industry benchmarking trial where Palgrove again picked up the Overall Winner award, the RNA Paddock to Palate 2018.
The recent announcement that Palgrove had been awarded top honours in one of Australia’s most prestigious commercial cattle competitions rates as of our proudest business achievements.
Palgrove was named the Overall Winner (100 Day) in the ‘blue ribbon’ Paddock to Palate competition at the Brisbane Ekka 2018. The purebred Charolais steers also won Reserve Champion Carcase (100 Days).
Some of Australia’s best producers participate in what is the country’s richest cattle competition. It provides us with an opportunity to test our steers against the best and validate the commercial production focus we place on our genetics.
Now in its nineteenth year, the event attracts the nation’s top beef producers and saw 644 steers entered from 92 exhibitors. It is part of the Brisbane RNA’s ‘commitment to celebrate and champion agriculture by recognising industry excellence and encouraging consumer promotion’.
The Paddock to Palate competition consists of three phases. The Overall Winner is awarded on the best aggregate points for:
Palgrove was fortunate to have been named Runner Up Overall Winner in the 2017 event, so this year’s top award is a real honour. In 2016, Palgrove also won the Highest Weight Gain phase of the competition.
For 34 years, Palgrove successfully showed stud cattle, holding the record for more Interbreed wins than any other stud. Once we made the decision not to continue showing, it seemed a natural progression to enter commercial steer competitions such as the Paddock to Palate.
We firmly believe that when a producer invests in a bull, that bull should add value to the whole industry – through weight gain, optimum carcase and eating quality. These attributes should be part of his DNA and should be balanced.
We congratulate the RNA cattle committee, Mort & Co and JBS for the foresight to organise this prestigious and ‘industry relevant’ event.

Palgrove is very pleased to announce that it has entered into a new partnership with the New Zealand Superannuation Fund (NZSF). This partnership gives the Palgrove business the capacity to grow its cattle numbers to meet increasing demand from our clients. It will also enable us to accelerate genetic development, particularly within our Ultrablack programme and expand our R & D across all of our enterprise.
Nothing will change in the day to day operation of the Palgrove business. NZSF has the appropriate level of understanding of agricultural investing; a commitment to long term investment horizons and a high standard of governance, responsible investing and operating sustainably. These strengths will make them a valued partner.

Palgrove has again performed well in the prestigious Paddock to Palate competition at the Brisbane Show. In Class 37 (100 day grain fed), Palgrove’s pen of six steers placed Second in the Overall competition. Points were awarded for feedlot Weight Gain and Carcass assessment on the hook and Eating Quality. The competition attracted over 1,000 steers from 50 Exhibitors.
We were also awarded First and Third in the Grain Fed Pen of Six Steer competition in the Prime Cattle Section.
It is gratifying to see Palgrove genetics perform in these competitions and confirms our breeding objectives are working in the commercial production sector.
Palgrove held its Showcase Female Sale on Saturday 4th March 2017 and it was a great day to meet with new and old Charolais enthusiasts from five Australian States and New Zealand.
We promised to offer some of our best cow families and buyers said they weren’t disappointed with the quality line up from start to finish.
For those who like statistics the sale results were as follows:
